Julie
Country: USA
Sex: Female
Age: 37
Height: 5'6.75"
Weight: 191 lbs
Reason To Fast: Weight Loss
Intended Fasting Method: Water Fasting

Report Progress and Seek Support: Today Oct/12/2011, I began water fasting for weight loss for the very first time. I started a 24-hour water fast that continued until approximately Noon today which is when I began resuming eating food. (This 24-hour fast may actually be a 36-hour fast.)

On the morning of Oct/10/2011 I was in complete disbelief that my weight was 191 lbs! I have never seen my weight this high in my entire life and I'm very upset! I weigh myself everyday as soon as I wake up and before this my last highest weight was 187 lbs in 2007. So, I've kept my weight below 187 lbs all of these years and it really has affected my dignity this week!

In 2007, I joined Jenny Craig and made it to my half way goal of 162 lbs by 2008. I'm sad to admit that I had to end that diet due to financial constraints which affect me still to this day. I'm currently technically homeless. For the last 3 days I have experienced menstrual cramps and bloating and started my menstrual cycle last night on Oct/13/2011. So, it's possible some of this weight may have been water weight as I have also been steadily increasing my daily water intake to 1/2 my body's weight in ounces of water each day over the past couple of weeks.

Either way, I have to get this weight off!! What helped me decide to water fast is from what I read in the Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar book last year. It briefly pointed out a recommendation to complete a 24-hour fast 1x a week for weight loss. I happened to come across your website today and decided to setup a profile and seek support. This morning when I woke up to weigh myself it showed 185.5 lbs. All that I had on my fasting day was 8 X 8 ounce cups of water.

Editor's Notes: Julie, Hi, Anna here. Julie, you've been struggling with weight loss for some time, so do I. I had never imagined I will succeed, but it did happen. In fact, weight loss doesn't need to be fancy or expensive. Simple and inexpensive ways may perform even better, such as fasting for weight loss. You only need to be committed to yourself. If you can do one meal a day and water fast for rest of the day, keep going for one week or ten days, you'll see significant results. If you can do twice 24-hour fasting every week, you'll achieve your 162 target pretty soon. If you can keep this fasting pattern in the long term, I'm sure you don't have to worry about over weight again in your life. Keep going. Let me know your results.

Age: 42
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 248 lbs
Reason To Fast: Weight Loss
Intended Fasting Method: Alternate Day Fasting
Intended Fasting Period: Over 21 Days
Report Progress and Seek Support: I am obese...flat out.

Everyone around me has been making excuses for me so I've begun making them for myself: I gained weight because I had kids (9yrs ago) or I quit smoking or I'm happily married and my spouse accepts me as I am...and the greatest excuse of all....why should I deny myself the things I like just to please others.

Truth is...I'm a binge eater and that led to 100 lbs of fat that is killing me slowly. I know what I have to do but every avenue I turned down, someone told me that fasting was unhealthy & that I should base my weight loss on my daily calorie intake. I think I've intook enough calories that my body could energize a small mexican village. Thank you for this site and for the support to walk this path.

Editor's Notes: Roberta, Hi, Anna here. Glad to hear from you and welcome to our row of fasting. People who told you that fasting is unhealthy probably had never fasted. So it's great that you seek support from us, as we know fasting works and it works well. Like you, I binge, occasionally. The good thing is I'm quite disciplined on weekdays though a little messy on weekends. Well, there is nothing wrong being 'naughty' sometimes. Fasting is not only a matter of eating, it's one way to take control of our lives. If you are committed to yourself, I'm sure you will do a good job. Now you've just kicked start for a better living. Do let us know your results after the 21 days of ADF.

ADF is good to shed pounds quickly but as a long-term weight control, you may consider to switch to IF.

Post some photos here to record your progress. This could be a good way of motivation too. Good luck.

I was 120lbs before I came to US and then I gained weight and now I am 139. I've been trying to lose this weight and it's been 5 months now... I'm unable to stick to fasting schedule and sometimes I over binge... I desperately want to lose these 20 pounds... Help me through it...

Posted date: April 25, 2011

Editor's Notes: Hi Momna, Anna here. Welcome on board our fasting community. As fasting is concerned, no matter how often you do it, doing it is better than not doing it. Fasting is not only a matter of eating, it is also something spiritual. It helps to overcome addictive behaviour. If you've gained too many pounds in a year, may consider two weeks of fasting every six months or one week per quarter.

As for myself, sometime I binge too. I'm a human being, so I just do anything anybody will do. If you've read this post in my blog, you may know that I'm extremely disciplined on weekdays and unorganised on weekends. That way I still get a good balance in life.

I notice many readers gain weight when they move to the USA. I understand that, becasue the size of a hamburger there is the size of three hamburgers here in Hong Kong. So it is easy to binge, even you don't tend to. May be more sessions of fasting may help.

Good luck.

Country: USA
Sex: Female
Age: 44
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 135 lbs
Reason To Fast: Weight Loss
Intended Fasting Method: Intermittent Fasting
Intended Fasting Period: 24 hours
Report Progress and Seek Support: I have never had a weight problem in the past. I have been about 115 lbs all of my life - until now. The past year I gained 20 lbs and am miserable at 135 lbs.

To make it worse I keep gaining. I bought a bunch of pants in a size 8 a few months ago and now they are all too tight. I am a vegetarian and eat pretty healthy but I eat all the time. Mostly from boredom. I have past injuries that prevent me from excercising very much, so that is not an option. I exercise as much as I can - mostly walking.

Anyway, I am going to try 18-24 hr water fasts a few times a week and see if that helps. I want to lose about 10-15 lbs.

I just completed my first 18-hr water fast today. I will work up to 24 hrs in time.

Thanks so much for this wonderful site and all the great information.

I am really excited about this new way of life!

Editor's Notes: Hi Patricia, Anna here. I fully understand your feeling. I was in your situation a few years back. I'm not a vegetarian, but love eating and sometimes from boredom too. My leg problem limited my workouts, so I do swimming. Fact is, at some stage in life, determination will overcome procrastination. When you dearly want to have a better life, you'll do something to make that happen. I've done that and you are doing it too.

My suggestion is not to set a rigid plan. Do it naturally. Set IF be part of your life, but eat when you feel you need to. You may also want to visit Mike O'Donnell's website, learn more about IF and the art of eating two meals a day.

Report Progress and Seek Support: I'm so happy to have found your website. It's very informative and has helped me address many of my concerns about juice fasting.

Yes I want to lose weight, but this is for health & spiritual reasons. I have back and knee issues that have rendered me at times on all fours.

I started 2 days ago and am intending to juice cleanse for 60 days. Strangely enough, when I weighed myself this morning I was 8.5 pounds down. Is that too much?

I'm drinking about 50 oz(s) of vegetable and some fruit juice per day. I'm also drinking a lot of water.

I'm having some headaches, but they aren't so bad. I'm also feeling a little weak at times and I've had chills. I'm feeling better today though.

I'd love your support and the support of the juicing community.

Many, many thanks,

Suzanne

Editor's Notes: Hi Suzanne, Anna here. Though fasting enables weight loss speedily but it varies. Usually people with fast metabolism lose weight much faster than those with slow metabolism. But 8.5 in two days seems quite a lot. Don't worry. It will slow dow.

I don't have the experience of a prolong fasting. But some kind of discomfort at the beginning is quite normal. It shouldn't bother you after a week or so. If that continues, may be good to consult a doctor. Your way of drinking lots of vegetable/fruit juice and water is really good. Just want to make sure you make the FRESH juice yourself and not any of the bottled drinks.

Also, please be very careful about breaking a fast after a prolong fasting.

Suzanne, as you are on juice fasting, you may want to visit my friend Sara's website Juicing For Health to gain further insight.

Intended Fasting Period: 15-21 days
Report Progress and Seek Support: Hello! Thanks for providing so much detailed and honest information about your fasting experience. It has inspired me to try fasting as well. About a year ago, I came under a lot of stress, and I started to develop unhealthy eating habits. I've been struggling with my weight gain and compulsive eating since then, and your story inspires me to remedy this with fasting.

After about 30 hours of water fasting, I started to get headaches and feel foggy-minded, so I had some carrot and orange juice (12oz). This helped to settle my headache, but I was still very thirsty and out of water, so I bought another cup (16oz) of carrot, beet, apple, ginger juice (it was quite tasty). Is it bad to drink so much juice in a short amount of time? I hope I haven't spiked my blood sugar level too much by doing this.

Also, I have some fruits in the refrigerator (apple, strawberries) that I bought before I made this decision to fast...is it alright to have a little bit of fruit during a juice fast, or will that nullify the benefits of juice fasting? (I don't have a juicer)

Thank you in advance for your support and advice. I look forward to hearing from you.

Editor's Notes: Hi Ann, Anna here. I'm glad you have an open mind towards fasting. When I speak with people regarding my fasting experience, many just think that won't work for them. You may want to check out the article The Weight Loss Battle Is Won Or Lost In Your Mind.

To answer your question, I won't drink too much juice to avoid excessive sugar intake. However eating some solid fruits such as a bananna while having fresh fruit juices to replace lunch and dinner is absolutely fine. Don't forget to drink a lot of plain water for the rest of the day.

In fact, you don't seem to be too much over weight, I don't see a need for a prolong fasting. Short term intermittent fasting may work well for you. You can gain more insights about IF in this website.

Editor's Notes: Hi Sharon, Anna here. 24-hour intermittent fasting twice a week has proved to work. You are feeling less bloated, right? That's just a beginning. Keep IFing, and the pounds will come off. To shed 70 pounds, I'm afraid you need to allow 6 months or. Keep doing it, and you'll see results.

Report Progress and Seek Support: I would like to lose 27 more pounds. I did a water fast last year for 3 days and lost 9 pounds! I've managed to keep it off, but I am still not at my goal weight. I don't remember why I stopped after 3 days, but I'm ready to start again.

So far I'm on day 1. Not too bad so far.

The thing that I have a hard time with is sticking to it. I'm an emotional eater...so even when I'm bored and full, I'll force myself to eat. I'm hoping I can be strong and avoid that this time around.

Posted date: March 11, 2011

Editor's Notes: Hi Fabian, Anna here. Water fasting for 3 days and lost 9 pounds was really wonderful. Being an emotional eater is no good. But the good thing is that you understand it is no good and trying to avoid it. It's interesting that sometimes I'm more eager to lose weight. Sometime I don't really care, especially during long holidays or weekends. Anyway, I think either you do it 3 days every quarter, or 10 days every year, as far as you keep fasting in your calendar, I'm sure you don't have to worry too much about overweight.

Editor's Notes: Hi Michael, Anna here. Water fasting for 7 days is quite demanding. Good to know that you are doing well. Feeling a little hungry is quite normal. This strugggling-for-food problem sometimes bothers me. When I have food in my mind, I start to struggle whether to eat or not. But most of the time when I don't think of it, I'm fine. Weight: 132 lbs
Reason To Fast: Weight Loss
Intended Fasting Method: Juice Fasting
Intended Fasting Period: 8-14 Days
Report Progress and Seek Support: Hi I discovered your site through fasting.ws
I have done two 6-day juice fasts in the past two years. My last one was Oct 2010 and I couldn't seem to get past 6 days. To make matters worse this last time I binged so badly that I gained 10-12 lbs since October 2010! All last year I was working out regularly and maintained 119 lbs. My ideal would be 104-110. It just seems my weight now does not want to budge from 130. I've been feeling hopeless and not motivated. That's why I am trying again with fasting. Today was my first day and I drank water until 8pm then sort of gave in. I had a large dinner. So tomorrow is another day and this time I will add green juice. I would love to juice for 10 days then switch to ESE. My fear is that I might binge again and only last 5 days. Hopefully I can stick with it this time. Wish me luck!! Btw did you do any colon cleanse when you first fasted 4 years ago? Do you really think it's neccessary while juicing? Thanks for reading and you're my "thinspiration"!!! I am also Asian about your height and LOVE to eat!!

Posted date: February 9, 2011

Editor's Notes: Hi Yuna, Anna here. You story reminds me of my 17 years of suffering. I did what you did. I love eating and binged on food. For a long time, I know fasting is my ultimate rescurer but my biggest enemy was 'procrastination'. Your situation is better than mind. At least you are taking action. Be dedicated, I'm sure you can make it. My suggestions are: (1) Re-set an IF plan, move on progressively. (2) DO NOT THINK about food. This works very well especially when you keep yourself busy in doing a little of everything. (3)If hunger strikes, drink a large glass of juice or bottom line eat a bananna or fresh cucumber. These will fill your stomach and make you feel less hungry. Read more of my fasting tips in this website.

In my experience, shedding 20 pounds does not require prolong fasting. It will take about 3 months if you do ESE in conjunction with juice/water fasts. To answer your question, I didn't do colon cleansing as I didn't see a need. Good luck.

BTW, don't forget to post your photos before and after.

Report Progress and Seek Support: I have been fasting for a little under a week now. I'd like to lose about 20 pounds and keep it off. A couple of years ago, I was at my ideal weight (110) and since then I haven't been able to get back to it. Granted, I don't exercise enough and I tend not to watch what I eat. But fasting will be my way of changing that for good.

I'm not sure if you could shed 20 pounds in 3 weeks by ADF. But if that doesn't happen, don't worry. You're on the way. Just allow a little more time, I'm sure you'll be there. I have always struggled with weight moderately but now it's out of control. I'm mostly depressed because I was doing so well for a couple of years and I find motherhood making it really difficult to continue on what I once created for myself.

Editor's Notes: Hi Carla, Anna here. Being a mother is always challenging. I really appreciate your effort in putting together a healthy family and a healthy yourself. You have a great motivation to back you up.

Trust you mean intermittent fasting for 2 days per week. That would be fine. But 70 pounds is quite an aggressive goal. If your schedule permits, I would suggest your going on alternate day fasting for a couple of weeks. That way you'll see faster results at the beginning which will certainly motivate you to continue.

All the best.

Post some photos here to record your progress. I wish you every success.
